06 Oct Rebound Relationship
He is nine months out of a twenty-six year marriage, he is keen, and three people have now asked you whether you are a rebound.
The word gets used as a verdict when it is really a question, and the question is answerable. It is also not the question most people ask, which is how long it has been.

What a rebound actually is
Not a relationship that started soon after another one ended. That is just timing, and most re-partnering happens sooner than people assume. Pew Research Center’s analysis of federal data found that in 2023, 15% of divorced women and 19% of divorced men who had not remarried were living with an unmarried partner. Re-partnering is the norm rather than a warning sign.
A rebound is a relationship whose function is to manage a feeling rather than to be a relationship. The other person is doing a job: filling the evenings, proving something, or ending a stretch of being alone that had become intolerable.
That is a difference of purpose, not of schedule. Which is why the calendar tells you very little and the behaviour tells you nearly everything.
The signs that actually indicate one
The pace is wrong for the information available. Someone talking about the future in week three is not describing you, because he does not yet know enough about you to want that. He is describing a vacancy.
You are being compared, out loud or otherwise. Favourable comparison is still comparison. A man who tells you often how different you are from his wife is still, in the part of his mind that matters, looking at her.
Your presence is the point. Not what you say or who you are. Whether you are there on a Friday. One useful test is whether he seems interested in your opinions or mainly in your availability.
The divorce is still the main subject. Not that it comes up, which is normal and healthy, but that it is the gravitational centre of most conversations after several months.
Intensity without curiosity. This is the clearest signal and the easiest to miss, because the intensity is flattering. Someone genuinely interested in you asks questions. Someone managing a feeling mostly talks.
That last pattern overlaps with something else worth being able to tell apart, which we take separately in our note on love bombing and genuine interest.
What is not a sign
Worth listing, because the folk wisdom here is unreliable and causes people to end reasonable relationships.
That it has only been a year. Plenty of marriages end emotionally several years before they end legally. The clock people count from is the paperwork, which is often the least informative date available.
That he still has feelings about his former wife. After twenty-six years he will have feelings about her when he is eighty. Absence of feeling would be the stranger finding, and how he talks about her is far more informative than that he does, as we take apart in our note on dating a divorced man.
That he is enjoying himself. Relief is not the same as using you. Someone who has come out of a long unhappy marriage is allowed to find the present pleasant.
If you think you are one
Two things are worth doing and one is worth avoiding.
Ask a specific question rather than the general one. “Am I a rebound” invites reassurance and gets it. “What do you think you are looking for at the moment” produces an actual answer, and sometimes a revealing pause.
Watch what happens over an ordinary month. Rebounds tend to be unstable in a particular way: very warm, then absent, then warm again, tracking his state rather than anything between you. A relationship that is about you is steadier than that even when it is going badly.
Do not try to become indispensable. The instinct when you suspect you are a placeholder is to be more useful. It works briefly and it deepens exactly the dynamic you are worried about.
If you are the person who just left a marriage
The honest version of this question points inward at least as often as outward.
The test is simple and uncomfortable. If this person ended it tomorrow, would you miss them specifically, or would you mainly mind being alone again? Most people know the answer immediately and some do not like it.
A second question is nearly as useful. Could you describe what you like about them without any reference to your marriage, by contrast or otherwise? If every quality you name is the opposite of something she did, you are still writing about her.
Frequently asked questions
How long after a divorce is it safe to date someone?
There is no interval that makes it safe and none that makes it unsafe. Readiness is about whether the last relationship is finished internally, which some people manage inside a year and others have not managed in five.
Can a rebound turn into a real relationship?
Sometimes, and it is not rare. What has to happen is that he becomes interested in the actual person rather than the role, which you will notice because the questions start. It is a reasonable thing to wait a couple of months to see, and a poor thing to wait two years for.
He says I am not a rebound. Should I believe him?
He probably believes it, which is different from it being true. People in rebounds are rarely aware of it at the time. Watch the month rather than weighing the sentence.
Does it count as a rebound if he was unhappy for years?
Often not. Someone who grieved a marriage while still inside it may be genuinely finished on the day it legally ends. This is common and it is why the date on the decree is such a weak guide.
Is it worse if there are children involved?
It raises the cost rather than changing the diagnosis. A rebound that ends is harder on everyone when children have been introduced, which is an argument for not meeting them early rather than for ending it.
Readiness, established before you meet
Nearly everything above is an attempt to work out, from the outside and after the fact, whether someone had finished with their last relationship before starting this one. It is a difficult judgment to make while also getting to know a person. A matchmaker assesses readiness directly at the consultation, and telling someone to come back in six months is a real outcome rather than a sales technique. It does not make anyone’s feelings simpler. It does mean the person across the table has already been asked the question. If that is the order you would prefer, you can start with an application.
