Green Flags in a Relationship: The Early Signals Worth Trusting

Most dating advice is written as threat detection. Watch for this, beware of that, leave at the first sign of the other. It is useful up to a point, and then it starts to produce people who are very good at spotting problems and not much good at recognising something working.

The positive signals are harder to notice, because most of them are quiet. Nobody writes a post about a man who answered a direct question directly. But those are the things that actually predict how the next two years go.

Two people in conversation across a restaurant table

They answer the question you asked

This sounds trivial. It is the single most informative thing available in the first month.

Ask what happened in the marriage, and you get an account rather than a deflection. Ask what they are looking for, and you get an answer rather than a joke. Ask when the divorce will be final, and you get roughly a date.

People who evade direct questions early do not become more forthcoming later. People who answer them plainly are telling you something about how disagreements will go in two years, which is the thing you are actually trying to find out.

They describe a former partner without contempt

Not warmly, necessarily. Some marriages end for good reasons and it would be strange to hear no feeling at all.

The signal is proportion. They can say what went wrong, including their own part in it, without the account tipping into a performance. Someone who manages that has processed the thing rather than merely survived it, and they are far less likely to import it into whatever comes next.

It is also the clearest available preview of how they would speak about you.

Their pace is steady rather than dramatic

Warmth that increases roughly in step with what the two of you actually know about each other is the version worth trusting.

What this looks like in practice is unremarkable: they suggest a second meeting without a production, they are reachable between meetings without being constant, and the intensity in week six exceeds the intensity in week two. It is much less exciting than the alternative and it is a far better predictor.

People coming out of long marriages sometimes mistake this steadiness for a lack of interest, having last dated in an era with different conventions. It is worth recalibrating.

They have people, and you eventually meet them

An adult with a settled life has friends of long standing, colleagues who like them, siblings they speak to. Within a few months, some of these people become visible to you without your having engineered it.

The reason this matters is not social. It is that a person who has maintained relationships over decades has demonstrated something that no amount of conversation can establish. It is the closest thing to a reference you will get.

They are straightforward about money without making it a subject

At this stage of life money is rarely neutral. Both of you likely have property, a pension, obligations, possibly a business.

The good version is unremarkable: they pay for things without theatre, they accept a split without argument, and general questions about how they live get ordinary answers. They neither advertise nor conceal.

This turns out to be one of the harder kinds of trust to establish. Pew Research Center found that among married adults, 84% have a great deal of trust in their spouse to be faithful, but only 56% have that level of trust in them to handle money responsibly. Financial trust is the last to arrive and the most consequential, which is a reason to notice early behaviour rather than dismiss it as unromantic.

They can be disagreed with

Somewhere in the first couple of months you will differ about something small. That moment is worth paying attention to, because it is more informative than any number of pleasant evenings.

What you are looking for is whether they can hold a different view without the temperature changing. Not agreement, and not capitulation, which is its own problem. Someone who concedes instantly to keep the peace is storing it up.

They accept a no

You cannot make Thursday. You are not ready for them to meet your children. You would rather not go away for the weekend yet.

A no that is received without sulking, renegotiation or a subsequent cooling is one of the most reliable positive signals there is. It tells you that your preferences will continue to exist inside the relationship, which is not something everyone can offer.

They are the same person in different rooms

How they treat a waiter, a parking attendant, someone who has made an error. Whether the manner they use with you is the manner they use generally.

Consistency across audiences is unglamorous and it is very hard to fake for long. Charm directed only at you is a narrower thing than it appears.

What is not a green flag, though it gets treated as one

Intensity. Rapid certainty is the most commonly misread signal in dating. It usually reflects the state the other person arrived in rather than anything about you.

Having a great deal in common. Shared interests are pleasant and they are not what holds anything together. Two people with different hobbies who find each other easy are in better shape than the reverse, a distinction worth understanding properly and one we set out in our note on chemistry versus compatibility.

Generosity that arrives early and large. Expensive gestures in the first month are information about them, not about the relationship, and occasionally about something else entirely.

Being easy to talk to on a first meeting. Genuinely good, genuinely common, and not predictive on its own. Plenty of people are excellent company for two hours.

Frequently asked questions

How many of these should be present before I relax?

This is not a scoring exercise. The items above mostly describe one underlying thing: a person who is settled enough to be straightforward. If several are present, you are usually looking at the same quality showing up in different places, which is why they tend to arrive together.

What if the green flags are there but I feel nothing?

Then you have useful information and no obligation. A person can be entirely sound and not right for you. What is worth avoiding is the opposite error, discarding someone at week three because the first meeting was merely pleasant rather than remarkable. Attraction on this timeline is often slower than people expect.

Can someone display these and still not be serious?

Yes, which is why the direct question remains necessary. Good behaviour is not the same as matching intent. Someone can be entirely decent and want something more casual than you do, and the only way to establish that is to ask plainly rather than infer it from conduct.

I keep meeting people who seem fine and then it fades. Why?

Often because the early signals were about manners rather than intent. Pleasantness is widely distributed. What is not widely distributed is someone at the same stage, looking for the same thing, on a comparable timeline, and that is a matter of selection before you meet rather than judgement afterwards.

Should I tell someone they are doing something well?

Yes, and more people should. Naming the specific thing you appreciated is both pleasant to receive and clarifying, and it tends to produce more of it. It also gives you a clean read on how someone handles being seen accurately.

Starting from a better position

Almost every signal above concerns something established before you meet: whether a separation is genuinely finished, whether someone has examined what went wrong, whether their intentions match yours. You can spend three months finding out, or it can be established in advance. That second option is most of what a matchmaker does, and the screening itself is described in our note on vetting. If you would rather meet people who have already been assessed on exactly these grounds, you can apply to be introduced.
